KRÄMERMAN KRAMERMAN KREMERMAN

Pesia KRÄMERMAN nee BRUNNER (or BRYNER) died in 1915. Unfortunately I do not seem to have a photo of her gravestone on Row 20, Grave  49. Perhaps a visitor to the cemetery, can photograph this gravestone? Pesia's husband Gerschon Gerszon had died in 1932 and is buried at Row 2, Grave 8.

I have earlier noted that when Pesia died, she supposedly was 38 years old. This must be a mistake. It is more likely she was born between 1866 to 1871. Perhaps it was 1868?

I decided to recheck this family on Pages of Testimony from Yad Vashem, and decided to list information from a granddaughter of Pesia Pesel and Gerschon Gerszon.

Please correct me, if needed.

Josef KRÄMERMAN,  born 1889, married to Rysia nee ABEND, six children (names remembered: Gittel b. 1914, Noach b.1915 , Judith b.1926, Reizel b. 1928)

Schlomo KRÄMERMAN, born 1892, married

Leibisch KRÄMERMAN, born 1895, married to Milka nee WEINBERGER, parents to Benjamin KRÄMERMAN

Rachel KRÄMERMAN, married KRÄMERMAN (or KRAMEISEN?), born 1895, married to Yankel Jankel KRÄMERMAN (or KRAMEISEN?), parents to five children (names remembered: Pesia and Jente Yente)

For this family, the names of at least five grandchildren are lost.

I have decided to list the names of those grandchildren whose names were remembered:                                                                                            Gittel born 1914,                                                                                      Noach born 1915                                                                                      Judith born 1926                                                                                        Reizel born 1928                                                                                  Benjamin, year of birth not remembered                                                          Pesia, year of birth not remembered                                                            Jente, year of birth not remembered

Take into the consideration that the family name can be written:

KRÄMERMAN  KRÄMERMANN

KRAMERMAN  KRAMERMANN

KREMERMAN KREMERMANN

The family name means merchant or shopkeeper in English.

The tragic fate of the family of Abraham Moses SEIFER from Mlodow

In Mlodow, next to Lubaczow,  in  the year 1931  four persons from one family was murdered:

Abraham Moses SEIFER born ca 1870

His wife Chana (Chuwa) SAUERBRUN born ca 1873

Their daughter Debora SEIFER born ca 1913

Their son Jakob SEIFER born ca 1915

The father and the son were buried together, under one gravestone.

I have not located the gravestone of the mother and the daughter.

Was this the whole family?

From the marriage register I found they had a son in 1890 they named Benjamin, who in 1920 had married Sara Lea SCHLAF, born in 1895. That means that Benjamin's mother was only around 17 when he was born. Because the gravestone says that Abraham Moses SEIFER's father was named Benjamin we understand that his father had died before 1890. Jakob's decoration is a broken tree, his father a bookcase with holy books.

I imagine that Abraham Moses and Sara Lea had married with a rabbi  in 1895, perhaps in 1894.

The couple also had a son they named Dawid. He died as a one year old.

What happened to Benjamin and Sara Lea SEIFER?

Did they emigrate?

Did they have children?

What happened  to the family during the Holocaust?

WINTER families from Lubaczow

 Information from Pages of Testimony.

Israel WINTER  and his wife Malke WINTER nee BEGLIEBTER were both born around 1900.

Israel Winter was a merchant, but also a SOFER STAM -  a scribe.

The couple had three children - Avraham (born ca 1927), Berl (born ca 1930) and Chana (born ca 1933)

From the Page of Testimony we learn that Israel's parents were Avraham and Rivka Rachel.

That means that  the father of Israel,  Avraham WINTER, had died before his grandson was born in 1927.

There was an additional WINTER family, that of a brother  of Israel WINTER,  named Selman WINTER.

Selman WINTER, born  around 1864,  was the son of Abraham  and Rachel Lea WINTER. He died in 1919 at the age of 55.

Selman might have married two sisters -  first Taube Mirla LEMPEL and then Sara LEMPEL.

With Taube Mirla LEMPEL he had his daughter Marjem WINTER in 1887.

Marjem WINTER married Jakob Samuel KOENIG r. GOTTLIEB in 1921.

Incredible, but true - Marjem had three sets of twins:

Taube Mirel and Chaja KOENIG were born in 1924.

Hersz Zysze and Salmon KOENIG were born in 1926.

Aron Nachmen and Szymon KOENIG were born in 1928.

Then they had a son named Moses KOENIG in 1930.

In  1892 he had married to Sara nee LEMPEL.

Selman  had the following children with Sara:

1. Hene Rifka WINTER born in 1893.

Hene Rifka married Nuchim Izak STERNBERG in 1921.

This couple had at least these four children:

Rudzie STERNBERG was born in 1921.

Cypa Chana STERNBERG was born in 1923.

Reizla STERNBERG was born in 1925.

Juda Leib STERNBERG was born in 1927.

2. Hersch WINTER born in 1899

3. Rachel Laja WINTER born in 1900

Rachel Laja married Dawid HALPERN in 1924.

This couple became the parents of

           Zelman HALPERN born in 1925.

Moses Samson HALPERN born in 1927.

4. Ryfka WINTER born in 1910, died in 1926.

5. Szymon WINTER born 1916

LEMPEL - a Levite family

This is an attempt to collect  information about one LEMPEL family from Lubaczow.

A couple named  Isak and Sara LEMPEL must have been born around 1800 - 1810.

Isak LEMPEL was a Levite.

Samuel LEMPEL was born in 1837 and died in 1917. His gravestone  is located on Row 19, Grave 56. Hopefully  the gravestone can be photographed in the future, showing he was a Levite.

That means that Samuel's son Hersz LEMPEL born in 1878 also was a Levite as were Hersz' three sons -  Abraham Abisch LEMPEL born in 1917, Samuel LEMPEL born in 1920 and Izak in 1925.

Abraham Abisch and his brother Samuel also  had at least three sisters - Tyle Chane born in 1915, Chana Lea born in 1922 and Brancia in 1924.

Ashkenazi tradition is to name a child after a deceased relative. In this case, Samuel born in 1920 was named after his paternal grandfather Samuel LEMPEL who had died in 1917. Izak LEMPEL born in 1925 was perhaps named after his paternal greatgrandfather Izak LEMPEL.

Looking for Pages of Testimony for "Lempel, Lubaczow" I discovered that Abraham Abisch LEMPEL born in 1920  had been commemorated by his niece in Haifa in 1999 as a Holocaust victim, as had  the  mother of the siblings, the wife of Hersz  LEMPEL - Tauba Nesza LEMPEL nee FEDER born in 1891, listed on another Page of Testimony.

Here comes a puzzle. Isak and Sara LEMPEL had at least another son, Dawid LEMPEL. But that Dawid was born around  1856 and died in 1916. If  the mother was born around 1800 - 1810, she may have given birth at the age of 46 or a little older. Possible?

Dawid married Malka TENENBAUM and they had at least two daughters:

1. Gitla LEMPEL was born 1878. She married Josef Leib MEILER.

2. Rucza LEMPEL was born in 1883. In 1918 she married Markus REIS and they had at least three children - Chana born 1920, Feiga born 1924 and Dawid in 1925. Again we see that the grandson Dawid LEMPEL born in 1925 was named after his deceased paternal grandfather Dawid LEMPEL who had died in 1916.

Is this correct?

WALZER from Oleszyce to Lubaczow

In 1864 a boy  was born in Oleszyce to the couple Moses and Chaja WALZER.

They named him Wolf - a kinnui. Perhaps Zeev was his Biblical name, his Shem Kodesh.

From the Oleszyce birth records we discover the names of  Moses and Chaja's  children who were born in Oleszyce:

1. Nachman WALZER born ca 1853, died in 1924 in Oleszyce.

2. Dawid WALZER born in 1856, died in 1902 in Oleszyce.

3. Josef Samuel WALZER born 1858 in Oleszyce.

4. Mize (?) WALZER born 1861 in Oleszyce.

5. So Wolf WALZER born in 1864 in Oleszyce seems to have been the youngest,

When did Wolf WALZER move to Lubaczow?

In 1921 the marriage between Wolf WALZER and Scheindla FREDMAN was registered in Lubaczow. Scheindla was born in 1866 in Lubaczow,  the daughter of Samuel Joachim FRIEDMAN and Beila SEIFER/ SEIFERT/ SEIFERIN.

Considering the fact that in 1921 Wolf was around 47 years old, and Scheindla around 45 years old, my theories are that

1. either they had married much earlier with a rabbi, perhaps in Oleszyce or in Lubaczow, and 1921 was the year they registered their marriage in the civil register in Lubaczow

2. or this could have been a second marriage for both of them. Could their first spouses have died earlier?

Scheindla FRIEDMAN born 1866 was the daughter of Samuel Joachim FRIEDMAN and Beila SEIFERT (SEIFER? SEIFERIN?).

Scheindla had a younger sister, named Hena or Chana, born in 1870 or 1874.

Hena Chana had married Dawid WEICHHOLZ from Kanczuga and they had at least two sons who both died during the year of 1927.

1. Melech WEICHHOLZ , 23 years old. Born ca 1904.

2. Rafael WEICHHOLZ, 22 years old. Born ca 1905.

Dawid WEICHHOLZ, born 1872 in Kanczuga, son of Benzion and Eidel WEICHHOLZ, then is listed as a person deported  from Mecheln/ Mechelen in Belgium to Auschwitz on October 10th 1942. Had he emigrated to Western Europe  some time after the death of his son in 1927, perhaps with his wife?

Ciwie ROTTENBERG born ca 1832 in Lubaczow, daughter of Ruben ROTTENBERG and Sara STERN, married Josef Vogel in Oleszyce in 1877.

Some thoughts:

Many of these marriages seemed to have been at least second marriages,

F.ex. Ciwie ROTTENBERG was 45 and her husband Josef VOGEL was 65 when they married in 1877.

Juda STEINBRUCH was 39 and his wife was 38 when they married in 1903.

Mojzesz KNOPF was 54 and his wife Sara DAMPF was 44 when they married in 1903.

Chane FEINERT was 53 and her husband Abraham Leib LANGENTHAL was 53 when they married in 1903.

Jente STEIN was 43 and Jakob GELBER was 48 when they married in 1914.

It is possible that the marriages were registered in both Oleszyce and in Lubaczow.

Jakub STEINBRUCH born around 1827. Beila STEINBRUCH born around 1831.

Some of the oldest  persons with the STEINBRUCH family name:

A person named Jakub STEINBRUCH died in 1922, 95 years old. So he was born around 1827. He was from Lukawiec.

Interestingly enough, his parents are noted in the death register as Abraham and Sara STEINBRUCH. That must mean that Jakub's parents were born around 1800.

A woman from Ostrowiec, Beila STEINBRUCH, died in 1918 at the age of 87. That means that she was born around 1831. She had been married to Mendel STEINBRUCH.

Fred MAJER was born in Lubaczow in 1922 and died in the States in 2009

Sometimes a simple Google search  for "Lubaczow" will give me another name of a person from that town.

This time it as a obituary from 2009.

Fred MAYER, born in 1922 in Lubaczow, had died, and from the text you understood that Fred MAYER was a Holocaust survivor, with many camps listed. He was liberated in Buchenwald.

His parents were listed as the late  Herschel MAYER and Esther SCHWARTZ MAYER.

It was likely, in my opinion, that the family name originally had been MAJER, and that Fred was the KINNUI, not the Shem kodesh.

From the death register and this website, I found that the spelling of the family name must have been MAJER, and Fred's father Zvi Hersch MAJER had died in 1930.

https://jewishcemeterylubaczow2015.blogspot.com/2015/03/row-4-grave-12-hersz-majer.html

Hersch Zvi's father was Efroim Efraim MAJER. Could Fred have been named after his paternal grandfather?

From the birth register of Lubaczow, we found that Hersch, written Hersz, born 1888,  and his wife Ester had at least these four children:

Rachel born 1916

Eidla born 1917

Golda born 1920

Efroim born 1922

So from this we can verify that Fred had the biblical name of Efraim Efroim after his paternal grandfather.

Fred was only around eight years old when his father died, and his oldest sister only 14.

What happened to his mother Ester MAJER?

From a Page of Testimony submitted by Ester's daughter, Fred's sister, we learn that Ester had been murdered in the Holocaust.

Isidor SCHNEIDER born May 27th 1888 in Lubaczow

My Heritage published, as free information, a list of Jews  who tried to emigrate  from Wien, Austria in 1938/1939, with scanned cards. This list  also include persons who were born in Lubaczow.

One was Isidor SCHNEIDER born May 27th 1888 in Lubaczow.

But who were his parents?

Two men with the SCHNEIDER name have been located at the Lubaczow cemetery.

Fischel SCHNEIDER who died in 1915, was a Levite, born around 1855.

Chaim Samuel SCHNEIDER  who died in 1924, was not a Levite, born around 1858. From this we understand that these are two different families - one Levite, one Israel.

Could one of these two men have been the father of Isidor SCHNEIDER?

Isidor had moved to Austria in 1910, when he was around 22 years old.

In 1938/1939 , at the age of  50, his professions are listed as "Religionslehrer, Kantor , Privatlehrer"(Teacher of religion, cantor and private tutor/teacher).

His knowledge of languages is impressive - German, Hebrew, English, Polish, Ruthenian (Ukrainian) Latin and some Russian.

Isidor was married to Itta nee MONHEIT and the couple had two children:

Theodor SCHNEIDER born in 1919 in Wien, Austria

Lola SCHNEIDER born in 1924 in Wien, Austria

The first application was made in May 1938 and at that time the countries the family wanted to emigrate listed: England, France, USA, Canada, Palestine.

On another application from February 27th 1939 he wrote that he intends to go to Hungary.

On the third document from July 21th 1940, the new Nazi  law of adding Israel to male Jewish names and Sara to female Jewish names, is in force. The letter is addressed to Isidor Israel SCHNEIDER.

Could I find the names of Isidor SCHNEIDER's parents?

On Geni.com I found a profile for a Mr. SCHNEIDER born May 27th 1888 in Lubaczow.

Here his father was listed as Chaim Samuel SCHNEIDER and his mother was Laja Hudes SCHNEIDER nee ZIEGELHEIM.

His wife was listed as Ida Itta SCHNEIDER nee MONHEIT, and their children were Theodore Teddy SCHNEIDER and Lola SPRINZELES nee SCHNEIDER.

With this information I returned to this website and found the grave of Chaim Samuel SCHNEIDER.

Group Two: Death Register

66 years old. Born ca 1858.

Son of Moses Izak and Rachla SCHNEIDER.

Recheck stone to look for the name "Chaim"  before  the name "Shmuel" חיים שמואל.

This means that Isidor's father was around 30 years old when Isidor was born and that he died two years after Isidor had moved to Austria.

I have not located the grave of Isidor's mother Laja (Lea) Hudes nee ZIEGELHEIM.

Last, Isidor is a KINNUI, not a Shem Kodesh. His Shem Kodesh was Isaak Yitzchak.

Additional info in records from Oleszyce

In a recent search for FALIK relatives from Cewkow near Oleszyce, I have used Gesher Galicia's search engine for Record Inventories and used the scanned images of old vital records located in different Polish archives.

Cewkow is listed in the Oleszyce records.

As you may know, there are very few vital records from Lubaczow that have survived.

For Oleszyce it is a completely different situation. At the Przemysl State Archives there are vital records going back to 1814!

When I looked at these records,  I now and then saw that some of those listed, had been born in Lubaczow.

So now  I hope to add these names to this website, and see if their names connect to those already here on the website.

As an example, Ester STEINBRUCH nee KATZ is buried at Row 1, Grave 27. She was born around 1850 and died in 1929. Around 1875 she gave birth to a son named Chajm/Chaim Salomon STEINBRUCH.

This son married Male Bleiberg, 24 years old , in Oleszyce around 1900.

Was there a man named Szama Abraham (WEINRATH?) who died before 1925?

This is just a theory:

As you may have seen from my last post, I have been wondering if Samuel

WEINRATH originally came from Lubaczow. There was another WEINRATH family

in Lubaczow but could they have been distant relatives. After the Holocaust that

family often used a different spelling of the family name.

Today, looking through the birth registers for Lubaczow, I found some information

that made me wonder if Samuel WEINRATH had a sister named Biene WEINRATH.

In his first marriage to Rozalia Reisel, Samuel had no sons, so he could not honor

any of his deceased male ancestors by passing on their given name.

In his second marriage to Chaja Tauba , he named his first son Szama Abraham

WEINRATH. Szama Abraham was born in 1926.

The year before, in 1925, another Szama Abraham was born in Lubaczow to

Boruch KRAUTSZTENGIEL (KRAUTSTENGEL? KRAUTSTÄNGEL?) and Biene

WEINRATH.

Could it be that Samuel and Biene were brother and sister, and that their

deceased father or deceased grandfather was Szama Abraham (WEINRATH?)

and that he had died before 1925?

Boruch and Biene had a daughter in 1927, a daughter they named Malka Reisel.

Then Boruch and Biene may have left Lubaczow as I see no other traces of

this family  there.

The KRAUTSTENGIEL  family name is very rare, but from birth index books in the

Przemysl ID project of Gesher Galicia, this name can be found in Sanok.

Back then, you may have gone from Lubaczow to Sanok by taking the train to

Jaroslaw, then to Rzeszow and then south to Sanok.

Does  this theory have some logic?

Samuel Weinrath and his family

Today I would like to remember Samuel WEINRATH and his family.

Who were his parents? His grandparents?

When was Samuel born? Around 1885- 1890?

Was he originally from Lubaczow? Perhaps not.

We know that he met Rozalia Reisel  GOTTLIEB  and they got married,

but probably not in Lubaczow.

Rozalia was born around 1891 in Rawa Ruska to Pinchas and Alta GOTTLIEB.

In 1919, when Rozalia was around 28 years old, she gave birth to their daughter,

Necha Cyrla, nicknamed "Nelka" or "Nella", in Rawa Ruska.

In 1926 Rozalia died, only 35 years old. She was buried in Lubaczow where you

still can see her gravestone.

Samuel was left with their daughter, only six or seven, so he did what most

widower would do at that time, he quickly remarried.

His second wife was Chaja Tauba FELD r. LAUB. Where did she come from?

Where did they marry? We don't know, so far.

Chaja Tauba and Samuel WEINRATH settled in Lubaczow. Their five children

were born in Lubaczow:

Szama Abraham born in 1926. He must have been born towards the end of 1926,                                               as his father's first wife had died  in of March 1926.

Basia Jachet born in 1929

Szajndel Rysza born in 1931

Szymon Jozef born 1934

Rifka Ita born in 1936.

During these years Samuel's oldest daughter from his first marriage, Necha  Nella

Nelka, lived in what must have been quite  a busy and crowded home, till she

moved to Jaworow to go to the gymnasium. The gymnasium in Poland at that

time, as far as I  understand, is middle school and high school. Later Necha

married Jozef HILFERDING and she moved to Lwow.

Samuel and Chaja Taube and their five young children lived back in Lubaczow.

In September 1939 when the German Army invaded Poland these children

were aged four to ten.

After about a month the German Army left, and then the occupation by the USSR

started.

How did Samuel and Chaja Taube manage everyday life in Lubaczow with five

children, under the Soviet rule?

In the summer of 1941 the German army was back in Lubaczow, and as we now

know, the situation of the Jews detoriated till the last Jews were murdered in

January 1943.

How long did Samuel, his wife and their five children stay alive in that situation?

We don't know.

So when you visit the Jewish cemetery in Lubaczow and find Rozalia Reisel

WEINRATH's gravestone from 1926, please remember those family members who

never got a gravestone because they were murdered in the Holocaust:

Samuel WEINRATH

Chaja Taube WEINRATH nee FELD r. LAUB

Necha Nella HILFERDING nee WEINRATH

Jozef HILFERDING

Szama Abraham WEINRATH

Basia Jachet WEINRATH

Szajndel Rysia WEINRATH

Szymon Jozef WEINRATH

Rifka Ita WEINRATH

Majer and Rachel Lea WALZER - greatgrandparents of Alejandra WALZER MOSKOVIC

Alejandra WALZER MOSKOVIC, now working in Spain, has roots in Lubaczow. She visited Lubaczow some years ago with her father Isidore WALZER z"l. Her father died this year.

Alejandra's grandfather Rafal Rafael WALZER  emigrated from Lubaczow to Argentina back in 1925. Rafal's parents were Majer WALZER and Rachel Lea WALZER nee WALZER.

Majer and Rachel Lea were first cousins.

Majer was the son of  Izrael Israel WALZER and Rachel Lea the daughter of Izrael's brother Bernard Dov WALZER.

Majer and Rachel Lea were both murdered in the Holocaust.

Alejandra is writing a book about her search for her family history, a search she has no idea what the end result will be.

Perhaps you have any information that will help her?

Kolel Galicja in Jerusalem and their connection to Lubaczow

Imagine living in Lubaczow from the year 1830 forward, and though you and your family could not, for so many reasons, go to Jerusalem to be a Thora scholar,  you wanted to support those from Galicja who had gone there.

The Charities of Rabbi Meir Baal Haness - Kolel

”Chibas Yerusholayim” (Jerusalem) of Galicia

“Founded in the year 5590(1830) by the Gaonim & the Tzadikim of Galicia to

support & strengthen the Yishuv in our Holy Land”

Despite the harsh conditions in the Holy Land,  those Galicjan scholars stayed there with their families, dedicating their lives to studying the Holy Scriptures.

So back in Lubaczow and in other places in Galicja, families kept small boxes - pushke - in their homes, adding money that would be sent to Kolel Galicja in Jerusalem to support those who lived there . Money needed to support families, widows, orphans, supporting young women to get married. A few times a year, a trusted local person would walk to the different Jewish families and collect the money in those metal boxes, and then send the money to Jerusalem.

Each donation noted with the name of the donor and the money donated.

Once I met Shlomo Helsinger, originally from Lubaczow, in Kfar Saba. Through his amazing memory, he looked at the list and described how the collector had walked from one home to the other, first floor, second floor, crossing the street, sometimes noting that so and so family was poor and could not give any more. He had the map of Jewish Lubaczow in his head - after close to 60 years since he left Lubaczow.

Kolel Galicja, still exists on Mea Shearim Street 120 in Jerusalem. I have been fortunate to visit a few times. It is like walking back in time, sensing history.

In their archives they have some of the donor lists from the 1920's and 1930's. For Lubaczow the lists were from 1930's.

If your family came from Lubaczow, lived there in the 1930's and would be likely to support the religious students living in Jerusalem, and you are visiting Jerusalem, it may be worth making an appointment for a visit to Kolel Galicja. Dress appropriately!

In this donors' lists from Lubaczow,  I decided to add the given names of the female donors:

ALTMAN

BELZ

BOGNER

FISCHLER  Kreinze

FRAENKEL

GOTLIEB  Rachel

GROSS

HALPER  Ester

HERZBERG  Ester

HOFFMAN

KNOPF

KONIG  Lea

KREMERMAN

MUELLER

REINFELD Hendel

RETTIG

ROST

SCHMIDT Scheindel

TEMPELMAN

WEINROTH/WEINRATH

Three of these women appear on the Yizkor list for Lubaczow, so it is most likely they were murdered during the Holocaust:

FISCHLER  Kreinze

HERZBERG  Ester

REINFELD Hendel

Rivka GETZ and her family members visited Lubaczow back in 2014

January 2014

Rivka Getz:

How sad and what a loss for humanity.

When our family came for a brief visit to Lubaczow to visit our grandfathers' graves,  Bogdan was right there, helping out in his kind manner.  He actually volunteered to drive us to  Oleszyce to that cemetery, which he had also cared for.

He was a really good person and will be missed.  Our condolences to his family.

Rivka, her sister Miriam and many family members came to Lubaczow in January 2014 as you can read about in this post.

Simon Lavee and Bogdan z"l in Lubaczow in 2016

This photo was taken by Sam and Tamar Halpern during the International Holocaust events in Lubaczow in 2016.
The man to the left is the author of the book Jewish Hit Squad, Mr. Simon Lavee.

Here is the author's description of his book. The book was published by Gefen Publishing House in 2013.

Jewish Hit Squad is about the Armja Krajowa Jewish Raid Unit. This group of partisans operated in the vicinity of Lubaczow - Zamosc June 22, 1941 - July 21, 1944.

My parents were partisans who survived the Holocaust hiding in the woods of southern Galicia. But this is not just another story about Jewish partisans during WWII! The crux of the book focuses on a unique situation – a small band of fighters who not only tried to survive German brutality, but actively fought the Nazis during WWII.

The book first outlines how my parents were involved with an underground Polish movement – the Armia Krajowa (AK). The irony was that this umbrella group did not particularly like Jews, yet operated a Jewish partisan group led by Mundek Lukawiecki (my father) in the forests of southern Galicia. My father’s Jewish partisan group was actually an AK Hit Squad that took out German soldiers, as well as Polish and Ukrainian Nazi collaborators. Most of their missions were carried out wearing German Wehrmacht uniforms, as members of the group (especially my father) were able to speak German. In addition to these planned “hits”, the group also attacked strategic German targets such as fuel trains, military installations, and general sabotaged Nazi operations.

The Hit Squad also undermined the Ost Plan, which was the German/Ukrainian plan to resettle Germans in Zamosc (which became known as Himmlerstadt). The book explains that attempting to stop this plan was in fact the main goal of the AK Partisan movement, led by the local commander, Marian Warda.

At the end of WW II, the book examines how Mundek Lukawiecki enlisted in the Polish Communist Secret Police (UB). He essentially crossed the line to the other side and continued to exact revenge on Nazi collaborators. After the UB discovered that he is simultaneously supporting the Israeli underground Etzel in Palestine by sending them Jewish fighters in 1946, he is forced to flee Poland. The book concludes with my parents’ arrival in Israel in 1948.

In addition to this unique and remarkable story, we have about 50 pictures of the partisan group/hit squad that were taken during WWII and will be an integral part of the book.

One of the members of Mundek's partisans was young Moshe Hoffman.
He was born in 1929 in Lubaczow. Moshe, who later became  Maurie Hoffman in Australia, wrote a book he called "Keep Yelling!"
