A list of KOHEN

Here comes a partial list of those buried in this cemetery who are KOHEN.

A KOHEN is a descendant of Aharon HaKohen, the first High Priest, and the brother of Moses. This brings us straight back to the time the Jews were leaving slavery in Ancient Egypt!

This status, passed from father to son since that time, has always been noted, both in the synagogue and during life events like when a boy is circumcised, when he has his Bar Mitzvah  when he gets married, when he is buried.
Imagine that status in the time the Temple in Jerusalem existed!

On gravestones the status of man who is a Kohen is very shown as a visual symbol - the hands in the symbolic Kohen blessing.

But the status is also written down in the text as “Israel, son of  Josef HaKohen”.

For religious purposes, men who are Kohen have and always had a special place in the Jewish community.

As far as I know, there are no special religious obligations of a daughter of a Kohen, but it must have had social importance, because the women are listed as “Scheindel daughter of David HaKohen”.
