As there are so few family names in this cemetery, it will be helpful to search for your family if you know they are LEVI.
A LEVI is a descendant of Levi, one of Jacob’s sons, and therefore belonging to the Tribe of Levi, one of the twelve tribes.
This status, passed from father to son since that time, has always been noted, both in the synagogue and during life events like when a boy is circumcised, when he has his Bar Mitzvah and when he gets married.
On gravestones the status of man who is a Levi is often shown as a visual symbol – a pitcher and a bowel, referring to the Levi washing the hands of the Kohen before the Kohen do the Kohen blessing.
But the status is also written down in the text as f.ex. “Bezalel son of Moshe Johel HaLevi”.
For religious purposes, men who are LEVI have a special place in the Jewish community, like the KOHEN.
As far as I know, there are no special religious obligations of a daughter of a Levi, but it must have had some importance, because the women are listed as f.ex. “Sheindel daughter of Neta Yaakov HaLevi”.
Because we have so few family names, I have added the women too. Perhaps this will help find family connections and enable us to add family names.
